I am appearing for CSE 2009. My optional for prelims is Indian history. How many marks should I score to get into CSE mains? I belong to the OBC category.
Amit Sahu - kanpur

In the prelims there is not much gap between the cutoff for the general and OBC category student. However, in the mains you should attempt at 1000 marks to be on the safer side considering the gap between general and OBC category is of around 50 marks.

I graduated in physics (BSC Pass- 70%). I plan to take up my civil services examination by 2009. I am not interested in physics. Please advise me which optional (Prelims and Main) would suit me better. I don't have any background in General Studies and other humanities optional. Whether one year is enough to clear my civil services Exam-09 in very first attempt ? Also i don't have good fluency in english (written and verbal).
Ritesh Palorkar - jalgaon

In case you are not interested in physics, you can opt one of the humanities/ social science optionals for prelims and two such optionals for mains. Some of the popular optionals are sociology, anthropology, geography, public administration, psychology, political sciences etc. Also if your english language is not upto mark, you can opt for a regional medium of answering. One year's time is sufficient to get through civil services examination.

I am a Civil Engineer preparing for state PSC as well as for UPSC Engineering Services Exam. My color perception is defective. I want to know whether it will render me medically unfit for above mentioned services.
Neelam Soni - Dewas

Color blindness is not the ground of medical rejection for the services mentioned by you. However in Indian Engineering Services, you may be found unsuitable for the field posting in some of the jobs.

I am a second year student of M.Sc.(Ecology and Environment). I am planning to appear in CAS Examination 2009, but I have heard that there is no option for environmental science in KAS or in IAS. I completed my graduation with Botany, Zoology. Chemistry and English, but i don't feel comfortable with these subjects. Please guide me about psychology and Sociology as optionals. Also inform me about central pollution control board.
Aditya Jain - Gaziabad

Yes, Environmental Science is not an optional for KAS or IAS. Psychology ans Sociology optionals are interesting as well as scoring. They are also quite popular. But since both the optionals are new to you, you will require to work on them from now on. As for your last question Central Pollution Control Board conducts its examination for the recruitment of scientists from time to time for which you may be eligible. Besides, you are eligible for number of organizations like Agricultural Universities, autonomous institutes and some of the specialized NGOs working in the area of environment.

I am going to appear in CSE 2009 with Botany and Sociology as my optionals. I have English medium in written examination. Can i give interview in Hindi medium as i have fluency problem in spoken English ? Does it have any negative effect on my selection ?
Saurabh Gupta - Indore

If you face fluency problem in English, then we strongly advise that you opt Hindi as your medium of interview. This will have no negative impact on your performance.
