Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS exam 2015) is the national level entrance test, conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruiting candidates in Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Indian Airforce Academy (IAF) and Officers Training Academy (OTA). The CDSE exam is conducted twice in a year by UPSC in the month of February and November, the notification regarding the same is released in the month of November for CDS (I) and July for CDS (II). Every year thousands of students appear for the exam to become the officer in the Indian defense forces. The CDS exam is a written test conducted at almost every major city in India. The candidates who pass this exam are called for SSB interview conducted by the service selection board (SSB) at various SSB centers located around the country.

The candidates can check the eligibility criteria before appearing for the exam, the details of the eligibility criteria has been mentioned below.


(i) a Citizen of India, or (ii) a subject of Bhutan, or (iii) a subject of Nepal, or (iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st July, 1962 with the intention of permanently setting in India.

Age Limit:

  • For IMA: 19 to 24 years
  • For Naval Academy: 19-22 years
  • For Air Force Academy: 19-23 years
  • For OTA: 19-25 years

Educational Qualification:

  • For IMA and OTA, the candidates must have passed graduation from a recognized university or appearing in the final year of graduation.
  • For Naval Academy candidate must have completed B.Sc with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering.
  • For Air Force Academy candidate must have completed B.Sc with Physics and/or Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering.
  • Candidates appearing in the final year of graduation are also eligible provisionally.

The candidates appearing for the CDS 2015 examination are advised to check the exam pattern before appearing for the exam. The written exam will comprises of objective type questions, for every question there will be four alternative. Candidates have to choose the one correct option.

There is a provision of negative marking in the question paper. For every wrong answer 1/4th marks allotted to the question will be deducted.

The candidates who will qualify the written examination will be called for SSB interview and physical fitness test.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the dates for the CDS (II) exam 2015. Candidates, who are interested in the CDS (II) exam 2015, can check below the dates of the notification and exam.

CDS (II) Notification date: 18th July, 2015

Last date for Receipt of Application: 14th August, 2015

Release of Admit Card: third week of October, 2015

Date of the Exam: 1st November, 2015

The candidates are also informed that the above dates are tentative and may be changed by UPSC.

The candidates, who are interested in CDS (II) Exam, have to fill the application form online, from the official website of UPSC. The applicant has to first complete part- 1 registration in which candidates have to enter their basic details and then submit the form. After successful completion of part-1 registration a registration ID will be mailed to the candidates, then the candidates have to proceed to towards part-2 registration in which the students have to enter all the details like educational qualification, uploading of photographs and signature in the prescribed format as mentioned in the UPSC website.

The final step in the part-2 registration is the fees payment. The candidate can pay the fees either by net banking/ credit card or through bank challan. On the successful payment of the fees, the registration process will be completed and the candidate can take the print out of the filled application form.
