Air Force Day: IAF celebrated its 88th Anniversary.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is celebrating its 88th anniversary on October 8, 2020. The IAF was established on October 8, 1932.


Key Facts

  • The hallmark of the event was air display by various aircraft.
  • The air display started with the sky divers of the AKASH GANGA. The Team was dropping out of an AN-32 aircraft with their colourful canopies.
  • The flypast also included the vintage aircraft, modern transport aircraft and frontline fighter aircraft.
  • This year newly-inducted Rafale fighter aircraft were the main focus of the Air Force Day parade that were  inducted September 10.
  • The ceremony ended with a binding aerobatic display.

Indian Air Force (IAF)

It is the air wing of the Indian Armed Forces. The Indian Air Force is ranked at fourth position with respect to the complement of personnel and aircraft assets. The primary mission of the IAF is to secure the Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare in the case of aerial conflicts.  It was established on 8 October 1932 as a part of British Empire. British Empire honored the India’s air service during World War II by prefixing Royal.  Thus it was called as the Royal Indian Air Force before independence. After India transitioned to a Republic country in 1950, prefix Royal was removed.

Commander of IAF

The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the IAF. The operational command of the IAF is led by the Chief of Air Staff who is an air chief marshal with a four star.
