Hoshangabad City to be renamed as Narmadapuram...

The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has announced to rename the Hoshangabad city of MP as Narmadapuram.

Key Highlights:

This announcement was made by Shivraj Singh Chauhan while he was addressing the program of Narmada Jayanti held in Hoshangabad.

He said that the proposal to change the name would soon be sent to the central government.

This decision was taken after asking the gathering on the banks of the Narmada.

The Chief Minister also announced that the MP state government will not allow “cement-concrete structures” to be built along the Narmada river.

He also stated that sewage treatment plants are being constructed in the cities located on its bank.

Background of Hoshangabad:

Hoshangabad city was named after an attacker Hoshang Shah who was the first ruler of Malwa.

This district was part of the Nerbudda (Narmada) Division and Berar.

It became the state of Madhya Bharat and later the Madhya Pradesh after India attained its independence in the year 1947.

Hoshangabad is famous for its beautiful ghats along the river Narmada river.

The major attraction of Hoshangabad is the Sethani Ghat.

New Name of the city:

The new name of Hoshangabad will now be Narmadapuram which will be named after the Narmada River. Narmada River is the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh. This river is the 5th largest river in the whole of India. It flows through the rift valley. A mouth is also formed on its face. Cities like Jabalpur, Hoshangabad, Mandla, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar Narsinghpur, Barware and Jhabua lie on the banks of the Narmada River.

Narmada River:

This river is also known as the Reva River. Earlier it was also known as Narbada (Nerbudda). This river is located in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. This river is often called the "lifeline of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat". The river originates from the Amarkantak plateau in the Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. The Narmada River forms a border between North India and South India. It is a west flowing river. Narmada river has a total length of 1,312 km. The river flows through the Gulf of Khambhat into the Arabian Sea.
