India-EU Summit to be held in virtual mode on July 15

The fifteenth India-EU highest point will be co-led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen, and President of the European Council Charles Michel.

India-European Union Summit will be held in a virtual mode on July 15, 2020. The highest point was planned to occur not long ago yet was deferred on account of the progressing COVID-19 pandemic. 

The fifteenth version of the highest point will be co-led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen, and President of the European Council Charles Michel. 

Anurag Srivastav, External Affairs Ministry representative expressed that the culmination will audit India-EU participation which will cover security and political relations, monetary collaboration and exchange and speculation

Discussions that can take place during the summit:

• The 15th edition of the summit will specifically focus on strengthening the rule of democracy, law, and right to freedom amid China’s aggressive behavior both at home and abroad.

• As the entire world is fighting COVID-19 pandemic, the leaders participating are expected to discuss global lives as well as the solidarity to protect lives, to strengthen preparedness and response capacities, and to mitigate socio-economic consequences.

• During the summit, the leaders can also show their determination to promote a rule-based multilateral order and effective multilateralism, with the United Nations and World Trade Organisation at its core.

• The summit can also discuss global and regional issues which will include current developments in Asia from the Afghan theatre to the Indo-Pacific region.

What can be expected from the India-EU Summit?

This will be India’s first multilateral summit since the Sino-Indian standoff in May 2020 and since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

France and Germany, both the European powers had backed India’s position during the standoff where the French Defence Minister had also shown willingness to visit India in near future to strengthen the defense partnership between both the countries.

The summit will provide an opportunity to strengthen Indian-EU partnership which will be based on shared values and principles of democracy, rule of law, freedom, and respect to human rights in India as well as in the EU.

Summit will also lead a discussion on the cooperation in climate, security, trade, and investment, environment, connectivity, and digital economy between India and the European Union.
