On August 19, 2020, the Union Cabinet approved to set up National Recruitment Agency. The agency is to conduct Common Eligibility Test for Public Sector Banks and Government Jobs.

Highlights

The Common Eligibility Test (CET) is to be conducted for non-gazetted posts in public sector banks and central government. The score of CET is valid for three years. Candidates qualifying the test can apply for a higher level of examination.

Significance

The step of setting up the National Recruitment Agency is a revolutionary reform. This is because the agency is to bring in ease of recruitment and ease of selection. This in turn will ease the protocols the candidates have to follow to get selected to a Government job or a public sector bank.

With the Agency being approved, around 2.5 crore aspirants taking multiple and separate exams conducted by different recruiting agencies through more than 1.25 lakh government jobs advertised will now need to appear for a single online CET.

Background

Currently, the exams for the public sector banks and other agencies are conducted through IBPS, Staff Selection Commission (SSC), and Railway Recruitment Board.

Currently, there are more than 20 recruitment agencies in the central government.

About National Recruitment Agency

The National Recruitment Agency was first proposed in Union Budget 2020. The agency will provide a great boon for economically deprived and also for youth in far-flung areas, women candidates facing difficulties traveling to distant cities and stay.

The government of India is to provide special attention in creating infrastructure in 117 Aspirational Districts.

The Agency is to conduct the exam in multiple languages.

Funds Allocated

The Union Budget 2020-21 allocated Rs 1,517 crores for the National Recruitment Agency. It is to be undertaken for a period of three years. These funds are not a part of the examination infrastructure to be set up in aspirational districts.
