UPSC examination is the national level examination which is the most challenging exam to enter into the administrative services. Union Public Service Commission conducts exams for the recruitment into Central and All India Services as well as Defense Services at the Officer levels A and B. Some of the exams conducted by UPSC are:

 ·         Civil Services Exam (IAS)

 ·         Indian Forest Services Exam (IFS)

 ·         Indian Police Service Exam (IPS)

 ·         Combined Defense Services Exam (CDS)

 ·         National Defense Academy Exam

 ·         Engineering Services Exam.

 ·         Indian Economic Services and Statistical Services Exam.

Today in this blog we will discuss about the pattern, stages and chief points about the UPSC examination.

The UPSC CSE Examination comprises of three stages:

1.     Civil Services Preliminary Examination

Preliminary Examination is the first level of examination. It comprises two papers that contain objective questions.

           a    .      GS Paper -1

100 questions (2 marks)

There is a Negative marking for each wrong answer (1/3rd of the marks awarded for each correct answer). The marks scored by the candidate in this paper will be counted while preparing the list of candidates who would appear for the Mains Examination.

         b    .     CSAT Paper or Paper -2

It comprises 80 questions from quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, reading comprehension, etc. A candidate, in order to qualify in this paper, must score at-least 33% of the marks i.e., 67 out of 200 marks. However, this is just a qualifying paper and the marks scored will not be counted while arriving at the list of candidates who would be allowed to take up the next level of examination.

2.      Civil Services Mains Examination for IAS:

Mains Examination is the second level of Examination that consists of 9 descriptive papers, out of which 2 language papers are of qualifying nature. The marks scored by the candidate in the rest of the 7 papers i.e., Essay Paper, GS Paper-1, GS Paper-2, GS Paper-3, GS Paper-4 and two optional subjects.

Optional Paper -1 and Optional Paper-2 have the main purpose of determining whether or not the candidate will be summoned for the interview level.

 3.      Civil Services Personality Test:

The Personality Test is the final level of examination. Only those candidates who qualified the mains examination surpassing the cut-off determined by the UPSC will be summoned for the interview.
